As the year comes to a close, plans and resolutions for 2021 are already brewing. When it comes to our asana practice, resolutions often revolve around words like “progress” and “advancement”. But what does that really mean? And how do those ideas about getting “better at yoga” really serve us?

In this workshop we will stretch and soften our ideas of what yoga practice should feel and look like. We will ground ourselves in the understanding that a challenging and nourishing yoga practice isn’t just about engaging with physically demanding postures and that awareness of when to rest or modify is in itself an advanced practice. We will also reflect upon the ways that 2020 has challenged us on the mat, and by doing so try to discover the mechanisms that drive us towards yoga “habits” that might be unsafe or not beneficial for our individual needs.

With that in mind, we will dive deeper into how to modify asanas and build up strength and courage to engage with challenges that come up in class – whether that’s experimenting with arm balances or feeling okay with allowing your body to rest when needed. The aim of this workshop is to inspire a deep sense of self-care for the way in which we approach yoga on a day-to-day basis. Let’s make self-care and bodily integrity the foundation of our yoga practice in the year to come.

Our new year coincides in the yoga tradition with the transition to “Uttarayan”, the period when the Sun travels from South to North in relation to the Earth. The Yogis identified this period as a time of harvest and as a chance for human consciousness to blossom. In this workshop, we will explore how backbends, on a subtle level, can help you make use of this time of transition in nature, to harvest your human potential and open your heart for new experiences and knowledge in the new year.

Modern life, our jobs, all that time spent staring at screens… it all takes a toll on our posture and on the health and mobility of our spines.  And after a year of working from home and more screen time than ever before, our backs are probably stiffer and less happy, and our heart spaces more closed up, than they were at the start of 2020. Backbends are probably the group of asanas that are most helpful when it comes to balancing out and strengthening a healthy posture. They offer you the possibility to release tension in your heart and lungs and create greater strength and flexibility in your spine.

In this workshop you’ll learn how to use your body skilfully to create stability, support, and integrity in all of your backbends, for a long, healthy spine and an open heart.
