All of us who like yoga have heard these terms: the sutras, the koshas, pranayama, ahimsa, Patanjali, the eight limbs, and so many more — and it is easy to start believing that all these complicated, esoteric terms are mega-abstract and have nothing to do with what your life, on or off the mat. However, applying a basic understanding of that classical Yoga paradigm to your own practice (in classes or at home) can take your experience to a new level of insight and depth. Instructed by Tim, an advanced Yellow Yoga yoga and meditation instructor with extensive experience teaching in New York, Amsterdam and Berlin, this 8-week course will help you gain an understanding of what the sutras are, and what place our own asana routine has in these scriptures. In addition to all level hatha yoga, basic pranayama techniques such as ujjayi, dirgha svasam, kapalabhati, and nadi suddhi, will be demonstrated, explained and practiced in detail. You will find the practices comfortable and joyful, and will learn to practically use pranayama for calming, deepening, and strengthening.
Some examples of course subjects are:
– Studying the Yoga Sutras: Intro to, and practicing of the first seven limbs.
– Working with the Koshas; all levels of your being: physical, pranic (energy and breath) and mental. Let the flow of your breath bring awareness of the flow of Prana within and around you.
– Listening to all the sensations within the koshas without judgement, with care, respect and wakefulness. This is “turning inward”.
– Practicing for the joy of practicing in the present moment, not for the results in the future.
No prior knowledge of yoga philosophy or pranayama required, some yoga experience is recommended (not for new beginners). All ages, life stages and levels of practice are welcome.

Tim Groen is a Dutch-American Jivamukti Yoga and advanced Hatha Yoga teacher, who grew up in Amsterdam and New York City, where he lived and taught, prior to moving to Berlin in 2020. He started practicing in New York over twenty years ago. Since then, he completed various trainings in India and the US, ranging from Jivamukti and extensive classical Hatha Yoga, to meditation and Raja Yoga: the philosophy of the Yoga Sutras. After years of teaching regular classes and workshops in New York (at Sri Swami Satchidananda’s Integral Yoga Institute for example) , he now calls Berlin home and offers his experienced blend of Vinyasa and Hatha in this city. In his classes you’ll learn traditional yoga techniques rooted in ancient philosophy, but taught in a current and applicable way. Students love Tim’s classes for his warm, easy-going style and clear, thorough instructions.
